DEBRIEFING

SSIE---barre-carres-(600x60px)

Debriefing is a brief psychological support technique. It helps overcome a traumatic event by transforming it into an acceptable memory, in order to prevent post-traumatic reactions from becoming chronic (PTSD). An event may prove traumatic when its intensity goes beyond the usual framework. For example, when someone is directly or indirectly confronted with a situation that caused great fear or involved death, serious injury, or a threat to physical integrity, ...

Debriefing takes place in two sessions:

  • a first long session (90-120 minutes), generally carried out quickly, but no earlier than 72 hours after the event;
  • a second shorter session (30-60 minutes), organized 6-8 weeks after the first session.

Legal framework

“The appointment of a trusted person outside the hierarchy, either within or outside the company, is not a mandatory standard as such, but is part of the recognized standards referred to in art. 6 para. 1 LTr; employers therefore have the choice either to comply with this measure or to provide an equivalent conflict management system that ensures the same level of protection.”

Excerpt from Swiss Federal Supreme Court decision 2C_462/2011
